The Reeder Family

ᕗ Sometimes it's better to work backward than forward when reporting on families.  This is one of those times.  I don't have a single earliest ancestor, but several, for my aunt, BetteRuth Reeder.

BetteRuth was born 11 August 1926, in Bison, Garfield Co, Oklahoma.  She died the 21st of November 2007.  Aunt Bette was married twice.  Her first husband was my uncle Don Simmons.  After his death she married Jack Peyton.

Engagement announcement, unidentified newspaper clipping

December 19 is the date chosen for their wedding by Miss Bette Ruth Reeder, 1104½ N Geary, and Donald George Simmons, 118 SW 24. the bride-elect is the daughter of Mr and Mrs T H Reeder, Bison, and the prospective bridegroom is the son of Mrs Amelia Simmons, also of 118 SW 24, and Earl Simmons, El Reno.
Vows will be solemnized for the betrothed couple at 8 pm in the Immanuel Baptist church with Rev J Paul Carleton officiating.  He will be assisted by Dr N M Stigler, professor of bible at Oklahoma Baptist university, Shawnee.
Miss Reeder was graduated from Hennessey high school and received her BS degree in secondary education from Oklahoma Baptist university, where she was a member of the Orian social club, Theta Alpha Phi drama society and Kappa Delta Pi education fraternity. She did graduate work at Phillips university, Enid, and now is educational director of Immanuel Baptist church.
Mr Simmons is a graduate of El Reno high school and now is a senior in the school of business administration of the University of Oklahoma.  He served in the army [sic - should be Navy] during World War II and was employed for 24 months in  Saudi-Arabia by  an oil company.

Obituary: Arizona Republic newspaper, Phoenix, Maricopa Co, Arizona, Sunday,
November 25, 2007, photographs; BetteRuth (Reeder) Simmons-Peyton

BetteRuth (Reeder) Simmons-Peyton was born in 1926 at her parents farm home about 7 miles northeast of Hennessey, OK. She attended Hennessey High School and graduated valedictorian of her senior class.
She next completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education at Oklahoma Baptist University. She taught 2 years in high school at Hitchcock, OK. She then went to Oklahoma City to work as a full-time church secretary. While in that position she met and married Donald George Simmons. They had 2 sons, Timothy Donald and Stephen Earl. Don's work required him to be transferred often. They were first transferred to Roswell, NM. Several transfers later they were transferred to Phoenix, AZ.
BetteRuth went back to school and earned her Master's degree in Education after which she began teaching at Phoenix College, one of the schools in the Maricopa Community College system. BetteRuth taught in this system for 31 years until retirement.
Don died of a massive heart attack in 1993.
BetteRuth continued to teach until 1997 when she fully retired.

In 2004, BetteRuth went on a church mission trip to China where she met Jack Peyton. On April 23, 2005, BetteRuth and Jack were married. They were fortunate to have each other for several years even though they weren't the kind of years that they had envisioned when they wed, but God blessed them with this; His Holy Spirit and drawn them ever closer to Him and each other.
BetteRuth is survived by her husband, Jack; 2 sons . . . .  Services will be held at Apollo Baptist Church at 11611 N 51st Avenue, Phoenix, on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at 10 AM. Interment will follow at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona

ᕗ Stella and Wilma are sisters, both Tuggles.  I didn't have anything else about the Tuggle Family until just now.  Find a Grave has come to the rescue with some information about them, including the parents and other siblings.  The link to Wilma, though, only gives information about her daughter, Bette Ruth, and not about her son, Ted, Aunt Bette's brother who was a veterinarian.  He died many years ago.

The Find a Grave memorial for Wilma is 20047167; for her parents: George Leroy Tuggle memorial 20046023 and her mother Melissa Saunders Tuggle memorial 20046061.  The Find a Grave page for Melissa also gives a hint as to the Etheridge mentioned in the wedding party of BetteRuth and Don.

ᕗ About Coin Reeder:  Every paper record I have gives his name as Cain.  Yet his tombstone shows Coin.  I don't know if that is in error or if every other record of him that I have found is wrong.  The likelihood that the marker is wrong is not unimaginable.  Many markers have mistakes on them.   Perhaps someone in his family can let me know about his name and the marker.

11 Nov 2018:  A descendant of BetteRuth Reeder confirms that Coin is the correct name.
