The Eggleston Family, part 1

In the past there has been much on-line about the Egglestons from New York.  I usually stick to this spelling as it is the one used by Uncle Lafe (Eliphalet born 1898).  Although there are many variations, I copy records as I find them, with whatever spellings are used.  Here's the branch connected to my husband's family.

Well, I've already started over.  There are four Eliphalet Egglestons in a row, with the last one the fella I knew.  I have information about one of the early ones, Eliphalet EGGLESTON Sr who was said to be born 19 March 1774, in Argyle, Washington Co, New York; married 18 August 1796, to Amy Cornwall EDDY at Fort Edward, Washington Co, New York; died 9 December 1831, Greensburg, Decatur Co, Indiana; buried Egleston Cemetery, Washington Twp, Decatur Co, Indiana.

But - the only records I have for him are not records I have seen myself.  I accept that the census record is probably fairly accurate (!), and the land record surely is, and even the cemetery index should be in order.  But I don't have much else on him and so will eventually skip to his child - Eliphalet Eggleston Jr who married Mary Jane Elder.  At least I have their children, have found plenty of information on them myself, and was even in possession of a tintype them.

For Eliphalet Eggleston Sr, records are:

According to a 1956 report, the cemetery was completely obliterated and farmed over.  The monuments and bases were torn up and dumped.  Records from the cemetery tombstone index contains the following names of people who were buried there:

ᕗEliphalet Sr's will names a son, Eliphalet.  Eliphalet Jr is the next in line and one I know more about.  [Why didn't I post the will here?  Because I haven't seen the original will myself and believe there might be a major transcription error in the online version!]

Eliphalet Eggleston Jr and Mary Jane Elder

I think I'll start with Mary Jane.

ᕗ A Woods County, Oklahoma, book gives this information.
EGGLESTON   [This is Eliphalet number 3]
Eliphalet, better known as "Jack", was born August 19, 1853, in Greensburg, Indiana.  He was the son of Eliphalet and Mary Eggleston and moved with his parents to Olma, Ill, when eleven years of age. . . .

I have this note for Mary Jane:  1880 Illinois, Jasper Co, Smallwood:  Mary Elder, 38, and dau, next door to Mary Jane Eggleston, 57; also William Elder, 20, and family, next door to her.

The only Mathew ELDER in the 1840 Indiana census, who lived in Decatur Co, is listed on page 216. He was probably an uncle of Mary.  James ELDER, who is listed on page 215 of the 1840 Indiana census (Decatur Co), could have been Mary Jane's father. He is the only ELDER who had a daughter of the age of Mary.

MARRIAGE:
Indiana Marriage Database, Indiana State Library:
Eliphalet Eggleston and Mary J Elder married 11 March 1841, Elkhart Co, Indiana

Another source gives the information as Indiana, Decatur Co, Marriage Book __, p 123.  Eliphalet Eggleston and Mary J Elder; 11 March 1841, ceremony performed by Mathew Elder, a minister of the Baptist Church.  Date is the same, county is different.

ᕗ A photograph of Mary Jane and Eliphalet Eggleston exists.  The tintype came into my possession after the death of my mother-in-law.  Her house was filled to the brim with items from her own 84 years, belongings of two sisters, and those of their parents.

I contacted a living Eggleston in Waynoka, Woods Co, Oklahoma - one I knew was a descendant of three Eliphalets - but didn't have a response to my letter for a very long time.  Then, one day, hooray!, I heard from the Eggleston family.  The letter had been passed on to the person who wrote back to me.

Mom and I made a trip to Hooker, Oklahoma - out in the panhandle - to deliver most of the photos I had "inherited", including the tintype and various documents.  There was a handwritten note from John Newton Eggleston tucked inside the case of a "tintype", giving his military information.  The photo of his parents, (Eliphalet and Mary Jane (Elder) Eggleston, was carried to war.  John wrote his name, hometown, and service unit to identify the photo, probably in case of his death.  As of May 2005 the photograph is in the possession of Evan Eggleston, Hooker, Oklahoma.

Eliphalet-number-3 and Mary Jane are listed on census records until his death, then she is listed:
