McCutcheon name
In answer to a query about why I use the spelling "McCutcheon" for my ancestors, here is my answer:
I've always used the 'eon' spelling - for the whole time I've been doing genealogy - 30 years at this point. McCutcheon and McCutchen are the most often found spellings. I probably found the 'eon' name first and have continued to use it, especially since there was such variety in spellings. That made it consistent for me.
These variations are in my records:
1840 census, death record, the Civil War Samuel Steer Ledger, obituary of James W Stocks, Prairie Fire article for George Samuel Stocks (written by his granddaughter Florence), pension application of Mary for Jeff, National Park Service American CW Record - all use McCutcheon
1830 census, marriage record of Ellen and Joshua, death record of Charles E Stocks, three records with Samuel as purchaser at estate sales, Samuel attests to Barbara Kizer's age, CW pension record Mary and Thomas J - all use McCutchen
1850 census uses McCuchen and McCutchin at the same time
1830 Property tax list, and more than one item in Jeff's pension record - use McCutchin
Correspondence from Leona Berry - uses McCutheon
Index to Loudoun Co, Va wills, witness Samuel McCuther (this was sent to me; I suspect it's an N rather than an R at the end)
1860 census in Ohio, Mary listed as McKitchen
1860 census in Ohio, Jeff listed as McCutchen
1860 census in Ohio, Isabell listed as McCuchen
publication by Linda Fluharty - Loudoun Rangers, Thomas J McKutchin
an item from Jeff's pension file McKutchen
item from Jeff's pension lists Mary as McCutchon
in 1862 Thomas J Maccutchen on promissory note
