Eliphalet Eggleston was born 19 August 1853 in Greensburg, Decatur Co, Indiana, the son of Eliphalet Eggleston and Mary Jane Elder, whose family is shown in part 2 of these Eggleston posts.
Jack was first married to Mary J Johnston in 1875. The marriage is recorded in Jasper Co, Book C, page 401. Jack and Mary had a son, George, who was born about January 1879 and died about 1884.
Little George is listed on one census with his grandmother Mary Jane (Elder) Eggleston. The other record I have of him is from an obituary for Jack.

-Eliphalet, better known as "Jack", was born August 19, 1853, in Greensburg, Indiana. He was the son of Eliphalet and Mary Eggleston and moved with his parents to Olma, Ill, when eleven years of age. Then he moved to Kingman, Kansas, and lived there until 1893. That year he made the race into the Cherokee Strip, starting on the line near Kiowa, and staked a claim on 160 acres, six miles north of Waynoka.
-He made some improvements on the farm and on Sept 29, 1895, he married Rosa Kruse at Belvidere, Kansas, and brought her to live on his claim. To this union were born six children:
-Edith married William Schwarm. They had one son, Leonard, and one daughter, Glorene. They made their home at Greensburg, Kansas.
-Eliphalet, known as "Lipha" died on Feb 3, 1975. He was married to Veda Berry and they lived at Chickasha, Oklahoma.
-William married Clara Landreth. They lived in Chickasha and had four sons, Harold, Oliver, Hershell, and Gene, and one daughter, Ila Mae.
-Viola married Roy Oneale. Mr Oneale died on Jan 20, 1950. Viola lives at Montebella, Ca.
-Mollie married William Brickman and they lived at Alva. They had one daughter, Tawanda. William died Aug 16, 1968 and Mollie died June 21, 1973.
-Theodore married Pearl Hanan and they had four sons, Don, Duane, Evan, and Estel.
-Jack began farming with a team of oxen and was known as the only farmer in this area to use oxen. In the slack farming season, he would go out southwest of Waynoka into what is called "Big Timber" and cut cedar posts with the help of this team of oxen. He would deliver these to Belvidere, Kansas, 120 miles away for a ten dollar bill. On August 12, 1923, a bad electrical storm came up and brought all the men in from the fields with their horses. They put them all in the barn and came into the house. Jack looked out the door just in time to see lightning strike the barn which was full of alfalfa hay. It looked like the barn exploded. He called for them all to come and help get the horses out. One of the girls pulled the big wheat wagon out of the barn by herself. They saved all of the horses, but the barn and hay burned for four days.
-Jack used to go around and butcher for neighbors and sometimes several neighbors would bring their hogs to one place and have a "butchering day".
-Jack and his neighbor, Mr William Schmolcke built the first Bethel schoolhouse, 1 ¼ miles east of the home place.
-On Sept 18, 1925, Jack died suddenly while sitting in the car on the street in Waynoka. Rose, his widow, continued on the farm working the ground and putting up hay as well as any man until her health made her decide to sell the original homestead to her son T R "Ted" Eggleston.
-Ted married Pearl Hanan who had lived just north and west of Waynoka. They had been living in Waynoka where Ted worked on the Santa Fe railroad, doing custom butchering on the side. They had four sons and knew that the best place to raise boys was in the country. Ted, Pearl, and boys moved to the farm in 1944 where Ted now had two jobs - farming by day and railroading by night. With the help of his four boys, Ted built up a dairy of Ayrshire milk cows and continued the dream of his parents living in the country on his own land.
-On Nov 4, 1959, Rosa passed away in the Alva Hospital.
-Thus came to an end a chapter in the book of Oklahoma Pioneers - the dreams and ideals of our parents live on in our hearts, making Oklahomans a rare breed who still love the fresh smell of the soil and the freedom of the open skies over our heads.

ᕗ At one time I had a lot of information about Rosie's Kruse family, but not any longer. I didn't have a difficult time tracking them back a bit and anyone else could do so as well.

-Last Friday, about noon, our citizens were shocked by the news of the very sudden death of "Jack" Eggleston, the name by which Mr Eggleston was familiarly known by his neighbors and friends. Death came while he was seated in his automobile on Cecil street.
-Mr Eggleston had been failing for the past year, and it was known that his condition was rather serious, yet he rose in about his usual health Friday morning, and went about his work. About the middle of the forenoon he, his wife and son, came to Waynoka in their car to do some trading. Having finished that business, he and the son drove the car to the store to get his wife. Only a moment after the son left the car to bring the mother, he was stricken with heart failure and died instantly in the car. He was 72 years and 30 days of age.
-The body was taken to the home six miles north of Waynoka where, Sunday at 2:30 was held the funeral, there being an unusually large number of friends and neighbors present to show their respect to one who had long lived among them and who always was held in the highest esteem by all.
-For more than thirty years he had resided on his farm six miles north of Waynoka which he took as a claim at the opening of the country to settlement. He had long been an active Odd Fellow and Rebekah, being a charter member of both these organizations in Waynoka.

-Nothing but the arm of Jesus Christ, whom he had come to know as a Savior soon after his marriage, was strong enough to bear the weight of his double sorrow.
-About six years later, in the year 1886, he came to Kansas, and settled at Kingman, where he lived until the year 1893. In September of that year he made the race into the Cherokee Strip, and settled on a claim six miles north of Waynoka, being one of the oldest settlers in this part of the state, and where he resided until the day of his death.
-Having entered this new field of conquest he felt the need of a helpmeet, and on the 29th day of Sept, 1896, he was united in marriage to Miss Rosa Josephine Kruse, of Greensburg, Kansas. To this union were born six children - Mrs Wm Schwarm, of Greensburg, Kas; Wm Henry, of Bayfield, Colo; Mrs Wm Brickman, Alva, Okla; Eliphalet, Viola Jane and Theodore, of Waynoka, all being present at the funeral except Wm H of Colorado, who was unable to be present on account of sickness.
-Mr Eggleston converted soon after his first marriage and united with the Church of Christ at Olna, Ill, and has ever lived a clean, godly life. He had been a member of the Odd Fellow's lodge for 35 years, and was a charter member of the Waynoka Lodge. He was a member of the Rebecca lodge of Waynoka, being instrumental in its institution.
-Those left to mourn their loss are his wife, six children, three grandchildren, two sisters, and three brothers, and a host of neighbors and other friends.
-The funeral services were conducted at the home of the diseased [sic], O V Beal, pastor of the Methodist Church of Waynoka, officiating. After the services at the home, the Odd Fellows of the Waynoka lodge took charge, and assisted by the Rebekahs, in a very impressive ceremony laid the body of their esteemed brother member in the Odd Fellow's cemetery northeast of Waynoka.
-Those from a distance in attendance at the funeral were: the daughter, Mrs Wm Schwarm, husband and son of Greensburg, Kas, Mr and Mrs G A Keller and daughter Matilda of Greensburg, Kas, Mrs Keller being a sister of Mrs Eggleston and her brother-in-law, Thomas Jarret of Milan, Kas, also her brother William Kruse, wife and two children, and her sister Mrs George High and husband of Alva.

ᕗ Back to the Bible presented to Rosie by her son and daughter-in-law. I have it last since it was given to her in 1938 - thirteen years after Jack had died, and many years after the children were born. Therefore, it's not contemporary to those events, but relies on whatever notes or memories were available to Rosie. Also, some bits were added after her death in 1959.
