John A Berry and Deborah J Adamson, part 2 - Deborah

The second day of March in the year 1854
John A Berry and Deborah J Adamson
were married in Monroe Co, Ohio.

Notice the buttons on Deborah's dress!

Deborah J Adamson was born the 29th day of May 1835 in Monroe County, Ohio.  Her parents had come from the southwest corner of Pennsylvania across the Ohio River into Monroe Co sometime between 1823 and 1825.  Their home, all the rest of their lives, was in Green Township.  The township was organized July 9, 1824, and Deborah's father is listed as one of the earliest settlers.

As with John A Berry, I have not found a reliable source for Deborah's middle name.  Plenty of notes list it as Jane, but she, herself, did not use that name in any of the sources I have come across.  She was noted as Mrs Deborah Berry - or as D J Berry when signing correspondence.

After John died in December of 1893, Deborah lived with her children.  That was for nearly 25 years as Deborah never married again.  Deborah's death certificate says that she lived in Kansas for the 25 years before her death.

Mrs Deborah J Berry, widow, age 73 yrs, 4 months, 4 days, died October 3, 1918, Grant Twp, Jackson Co, Kansas, of arterioschlorosis and influenzaLength of residence in state 25 years; at place of death 25 years.  Born May 27, Monroe Co, Ohio, father Barnet Adamson, b Pennsylvania; mother Isabell Johnston, b Pennsylvania.  Informant: Everett Berry, Osage, Kansas.  Removal to Powersville, Missouri.  Undertaker, W A Irwin, Havensville, Kansas.

Repeating this note:
Pioneers of the Bluestem Prairie; Riley County Genealogical Society; Manhattan, Kansas. page 168 Pottawatomie County; Berry [entry] 382
Deborah (Adamson) Berry and her four unmarried children came to Kansas from Missouri and settled in Lincoln Twp, Pott Co in 1894.

As noted in John's information, both he and Deborah were buried in Powersville Cemetery, Putnam Co, Missouri.  Deborah outlived two of her children, Eliza and Robert.  Three of her children moved to Oklahoma - John, Adamson, and Oatis.  One child - Thomas - stayed in Missouri.  One child - Isabella - stayed in Wayne Co, Iowa.  And three lived their lives in Kansas.  Once the family moved from Ohio, they settled in the four adjoining states for ever.

One thing that I find interesting about the Iowa and Missouri maps:  Putnam County, Missouri and Wayne County, Iowa are adjacent.  I think I commented in a much earlier post that it was as if there was no political boundary at all when it came to marriages and births.

Deborah appears on these census records with her children:

I have several photographs of Deborah, including one of her smoking a corn-cob pipe.  There are also some of her with descendants.

John William Berry is Deborah and John's oldest child.
He is shown here with his daughter Alma Berry McCoy and her children.

Frances Isabella "Bella" Berry Duncan is standing left, with her daughter
Clyda Duncan Marick and granddaughter Violet Marick - Deborah's great granddaughter.

Deborah holding great-granddaughter Madge McGuire, daughter of
Addie Duncan McGuire, and, once again, Bella Berry Duncan

This photograph shows Deborah on the right, her son John William Berry
behind her, his wife Gennettie Crofford Berry to his right.  In front of Nettie is her
mother Lurinda Stansbury Crofford. In the middle is John and Nettie's daughter
Cassie Berry DeWitt and son Loren.  Since Loren was born about 1906, this
photograph is earlier than the ones posted above.

I have more photos of Deborah and John's children.  I will post them separately.
Looking at these photos of Deborah, I think she liked pretty things.  Her dresses always have something feminine - lace or bows or fancy buttons.  In the first one with son John and daughter Alma, Deborah appears to have a bit of lace wrapped around her fingers - lace and thread.  Perhaps she was crocheting while waiting for the photographer?

John A Berry and Deborah J Adamson, part 1 - John

The second day of March in the year 1854
John A Berry and Deborah J Adamson
were married in Monroe Co, Ohio.

The couple are the earliest pair, in one of our family lines, for whom I have photographs.  Since John was born in 1829 and Deborah in 1835, I think that having photos of people born that early in the century is amazing.  John died 1893 and I have only one picture of him, but Deborah lived until the end of 1918 and there are photographs of her aplenty.

I have been putting photographs on Find a Grave, but there is seldom room for additional information unless I manage the memorial and that isn't often the case.

Since I am going through all my files I thought I'd add photographs here with some information briefly noted (you don't have to put up with text of census and land and other records - for the most part).  Sometimes there were letters between cousins and I've kept excerpts in the files. I will include those if they add family information.

John and Deborah had at least 9 children.  There are no major gaps in the birth record, so it is easy to believe they had no early-childhood deaths, but that is just an assumption.  To begin . . .

John A Berry was born the 19th of May 1829 at Morgantown, Monongalia County, Virginia.  Later that would be West Virginia, but not until the War Between the States.

By 1850 John had moved across the Ohio River to Monroe Co, Ohio.  On the census records, John is as a 22-year-old wagon maker living with a cousin, from his mother's family, who was a blacksmith.  He is again listed as a wagon maker in the 1860 census. For the 1870 record his occupation has become "farmer".

When studying census records, farming is often listed as the main occupation, usually because anyone living outside a city was a "farmer" - at least supplying their own family and community with farmed goods.  Most, though, also had a skill that provided the community's other needs and the farmer with cash or trade.

John was still a farmer in 1880 with 8 of his 9 children still at home.  There is no complete collection of census records for 1890, but at the time of his death in 1893, John was living in Missouri.

In my file I have a note that in 1882 John and Deborah moved to Iowa.  I don't know where this date and place came from.  Obviously I didn't make complete notes.  Then, according to my file, he moved to Putnam County in 1883.

Now that I have a mystery - my lack of complete information - I will add that to my Someday file.  Well, Someday came just now.  I read more closely my file for John and see that the information about the moves came from a family researcher who worked on the Berry family line as her husband's bunch.  The information is published in the book Pioneers of the Bluestem Prairie by the Riley County Genealogical Society, Manhattan, Kansas.  The section of interest is Pottawatomie County, page 168, entry 382: BERRY
"John and Deborah moved from Ohio to Iowa in 1882 and the next year to Putnam Co, Missouri.  After Mr Berry's death in 1893, Deborah and four of their children moved to a farm south of Havensville. submitted by Mrs Lola Berry, Havensville, grdaughter-in-law."

I find that Lola did a good job in her recording of the Berry History (a self-printed booklet of which I have a copy) and I have several other sources that back up her findings.  And - - my brain just kicked in.  The cabinet portrait was taken in Lineville, Iowa.  That dates the photograph to 1892, doesn't it?  That's a Really Good Reason to be posting all this information: it makes me take a second look - or even a third or fourth look - at all the "things" I have available to me.

Another mystery is John's middle name.  Often a child is named for family, but equally as often for someone of influence in the area, or a close neighbor.  The only source I can find of Alpheus is after the fact.  The birth records of five of John's children give the information that their father is John Alpheus Berry.  The catch is that they all come from the IGI (sources often submitted by LDS researchers, rather than filmed from Civil Records.  Since all five of these are identical, that makes them suspicious.)  Records for Everett, James O, Viola - which I copied from microfilm of actual birth records, don't show Alpheus - - just John A.

Among the items we inherited from this family line is this funeral card.  It's astonishing what you can do with a computer in this day and age.  The card is black as pitch with gold lettering and even in broad daylight is difficult to read John's information.  I've lightened it considerably and it's now easily readable on this screen - more easily than the card itself.

You can see that John was only 64 when he died.  His parents lived longer than that.

After John's death, his children signed over to their mother, Deborah, all interest in the estate.  The paper is in this wallet, an amazing artifact from the life of John.

The date on this paper is incorrect.  John died December of 1893.
The writer of the assignment didn't change the year to 1894.

John and Deborah are buried in Powersville, Putnam Co, Missouri.  We made a trip to that part of the country many years ago.  Powersville is in the very hilly part of Missouri (!) and the view from the cemetery is spectacular.  It was a cloudy and wet day and we were very glad to be there.

Llanafan

I research and write about Llanafan often since that's where one of my Welsh family lines comes from.  Many years ago while doing research at the Oklahoma Historical Society Library - when it was in it's former lovely location - I came across a book that was just what I needed - this Topographical Dictionary of Wales, published in 1840.  Golly Gee Whiz!  What a find!  Someone in this state must have had quite an interest in Wales in the 1960s for this to end up in the library.

How cool is that?

Two Dailey Documents

I am going through all the paper documents I have in my files.  My plan is to either put them in this blog or toss them, although there are some I will keep even though there are digital copies available.

One of the reasons to keep certain papers is to remind me of the trips I took to locate them.  That was back in the Good Old Days of Genealogy.  Yes, it was a slow way of researching, but the travel was an adventure, the discoveries sometimes astonishing, and the people I met on those trips were certainly the most amiable you could ever hope to run across.

These two items are from my Dailey documents.  After all that positivity about travel, one came from correspondence.  They tie together.

My great-great grandmother is Juliet Dailey, daughter of William.  William is my great-great-great grandfather; Vincent my great-great-great-great grandfather.  Yes, I know that some prefer to use the numerical designations such as 4th great, but I think that the spelled-out greats makes me appreciate more how far back the person is from me.

Vincent is buried in Zoar Cemetery, Caldwell Twp, Appanoose Co, Iowa.  We were there many years ago and photographed the markers.  The Find-a-Grave memorial for Vincent is 7756539.

Although you can click on this image and enlarge it for reading, I still like to transcribe handwritten information.

State of Iowa
Appanoose County
I, Wm Dailey, on oath depose and say that the following named persons are the only children and heirs [known is marked through] of Vincent Dailey deceased, to wit:
John Dailey, Peter Dailey, Thomas Dailey, O V Dailey, Nancy Cline, Zillah Sloan, James Dailey, and Wm Dailey.
[signed] Wm Dailey
Subscribed and sworn to before me by the said Wm Daily this 2d day of Jany 1872
W __? Johnson
CCC [Clerk of the county court]

The next document is a page from a family Bible.  But - the handwriting is the same for every entry, too consistent to have been written over the years as the events occurred.  Still, the handwriting style of the list appears to be more than a hundred years old.  This copy was sent to me in 2005 by a Dailey descendant.

I'm not keeping either of these sheets.  The information itself is typed into my computer; the statement of heirs is on file in the courthouse; the Bible page will be kept digitally.  I only have a thousand more to go . . .

What's In a Name? Avarina

This article appeared in a publication I picked up one of the times I was in Wales.  I knew that I had at least one Avarina in the family and found this interesting.

"Is there an Avarina in your tree?"  There follows a query about a 3rd great grandmother who was an Avarina.  "According to the IGI for Wales, Given Names section, there were 136 girls baptised in Cardiganshire as Avarina, and variants, and only 5 in the rest of Wales."

Then: "Further information can be added to the above" . . . and gives several references to the name Avarina, one as early as the late 1600s.

Here is a death record for "our" Avarina, of the house at Bontfach, Llanafan, Cardiganshire, Wales.

Certificate of Death, Wales, Cardiganshire, Aberystwyth Dist, Rheidol Sub District. 1847
Entry 14  Eighth of December 1847, at Bontfach, parish of Llanavan, Avarina Richard, female, 27 years, daughter of John Richard, labourer.  Cause of death: decay, not certified.  Informant: Jane Richard, by mark, present at the death, Bontfach, Parish of Llanavan.  Registered Eighth of December 1847, John Davies, Registrar.

This is from the parish records.  I viewed the film at the Family History Center in September 1993.  At the time, I remember the film being of better quality than the prints that were made from it.

Wales, Cardiganshire, Diocese of St David, filmed 1949.  Bishops Transcripts, 1811-1878; Llanafan y Trawscoed 1811-1815, 1818, 1820-1878.   [FHC film 0105150, copied 1 Sept 1993 by LC]
*1847 Burials, Entry 271  Avarinah Richard, Bontfach, buried Dec 11th, age 27, David Davies, off[iciating] Minister

Avarina Richard is my 2nd-great-great aunt, according to my computer - the daughter of John and Jane Richard(s), my third great grandparents.  I also have a baptism date for Avarina, but don't seem to be able to locate my source for that record.  Nevertheless, the date is March 18, 1821.  Since I have baptisms from the area and the time period, I may be overlooking it for now.

There are five other Avarinas in my family files, all related, but at a greater distance.  This Avarina appears on a census record with a Rowlands.

1841 Wales, Cardiganshire, Llan Ilar Ucha

Richard Rowlands, 25, farmer, b in county / Eleanor, 20, b in county // Richard, 3, b in county; David, 1, b in county /// Lem Davies, 15, ag lab, b in county; Avrina Richards, 20, ag lab, b in county; John Powel, 12, ag lab, b in county

There is no neat and tidy closing to this article.  Some day . . .

Wales 1911 - Census for Llanafan, Cardiganshire

There are 87 households in the village of Llanafan as reported on the 1911 Census.  It's interesting reading since there are many women as heads of household, either as a widow or listed as head of family.  Were the men working elsewhere?  I know my great-grandmother is listed with three of her children while her husband and oldest child were working in Treorchy.  That's on my list, too, to transcribe those records.  One of these days . . .

In the meantime, I jumped to the 1911 after re-discovering why I hadn't transcribed the 1861 Census.  It's a poorly filmed census and the copies I have are difficult to read, because of the slightly out of focus pages and the handwriting.  Also, the fella at the FHL decided he couldn't make photocopies for me since the film was wound backwards on the reel.  I guess it was too much to ask that he re-wind it.

I have included the information from the Enumerator's page of each household, as well as the schedule.  Usually the handwriting is more easily read or there is further information.
