Looking for the Smith Children

I thought yesterday that I wouldn't be posting any more of my husband's family lines - for a while at least.  While lying abed this morning, thinking, I decided to go ahead and post some of what I have found so far in hope that someone reading would have more information about the Smiths.

I've posted about my trip to Kansas searching for John Samuel Smith.  John and Nancy had three children and I have two photographs of one of them, daughter Fannie, although I have been unable find anything else about her after the city directory listing.

Mary Elizabeth Smith

The next oldest child is Mary Elizabeth Smith who married James H Greer.  Mary is a direct line, so I have quite a bit for her.  The family saved Everything.  Mary married James Henry Greer and information about him, with a few photographs of Mary can be found here. (waay down on the page).  Mary lived a long time and appears on plenty of census records:

Mary and James Greer married in 1871.  For all the wedding or early photographs in this family, there isn't one, or any, for this couple, nor any kind of formal studio photograph of the pair.  This newspaper clipping records the event of their marriage.  I don't have a marriage record other than these clippings.

Mr and Mrs Greer are Wed 62 Years
   Mr and Mrs J H Greer of Clio reached another mile stone New Year's day, when they had the pleasure of celebrating their sixty-second wedding anniversary.
   A bounteous dinner was served at the noon hour by the children of this worthy couple in honor of the occasion.  A special item on the menu was a delicious fruit cake given to them by their grandson, Merlin Berry of Vici, Okla.
   The following children were present to enjoy this event; Mrs Alta Berry of Vici, Okla., who is spending the winter with her parents, Harley Greer and family of Humeston and Clint Greer and family of Kansas City, Mo.
   A delightful afternoon was spent visiting and playing games and all present had such a fine time they are looking forward to a similar celebration next year. 
    Mrs Greer is in poor health, but Mr Greer is hale and hearty. We join with their many friends in extending congratulations to this well known couple.

Mary died a few days after this celebration.

---Obituary: Unidentified newspaper clipping: Mrs J H Greer of Clio is Dead
   Mrs James H Greer, 79, of Clio passed away in her home Friday morning, January 6, following a stroke of paralysis which she suffered a few days previous.  The funeral services were held in the Christian Church at Clio, Sunday afternoon, January 8 and were conducted by the Rev Frank T Carter, pastor of the Church of Christ at Humeston.  Burial was in the Clio cemetery. The following is an obituary:
   Mary Elizabeth Smith was born in Owen county, Kentucky, October 3, 1853 and departed this life, January 6th, 1933 at the age of 79 years, 3 months and 3 days.  When three years of age she moved with her parents to Putnam county, Mo, where she grew to womanhood.  January 1st, 1871, she was united in marriage to James H Greer, who survives her.  To this union were born five children:  Emma Fordyce, who preceded her mother in death December 14, 1928, Millard of Eagle, Idaho; Alta Berry of Vici, Okla, Harley of Humeston; and Clint of Kansas City, Mo.  Mrs Greer leaves to mourn their loss, her husband; three sons and a daughter; 19 grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, besides a host of friends.  
   She united with the Christian church at the age of 22 years and has been a conscientious member during all the years and was faithful until the day of her home-going.  January 1st, 1933, the last Sunday of her life, she and her husband, James H Greer, celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary with the immediate members of their family.

Mary had a bit of wealth, but I don't know the source of it.  She had a will which left property to her husband  - - I hereby will, devise and bequeath unto my beloved husband, J H Greer, all property of which I may die seized and possessed, after the payment of the expenses of my last illness and burial, he to have the right to use and spend the same as he may see fit and as his needs may require, and without any limitations except that at his death all of my estate and property then remaining undisposed of by him, after the payment of that expenses of his last illness and burial, shall go to and become the absolute property of the devisees and legatees hereinafter named.  And Mary had a bit of money in the bank in 1932 when the will was drawn up - $600 - which was divided among her children and grandchildren at her death.

Susan Martha Smith

Third child was Susan Martha Smith, who married Jasper H Crawford.  I didn't know anything about her when I started researching the family, but now have a bit more.  Still looking for information about her, though.

Susan is shown in the large photograph I have on my wall.  For many years I only knew that she married Jasper H Crawford and when.  Period.  After looking for her lately, I have discovered online some of the records for Jasper, which indicate that Susan died before February 1898 which is when Jasper married for the second time.  Jasper and Susan had 4 children - John Harmon, William Walter, Ernest E, and Emily Martha.  I have found some information about them through newspaper obituaries.  But nothing about the death of Susan

That's it.  I have, from a family history, that Susan and Jasper married May 22, 1873, Putnam Co, Missouri, but have not seen the record itself.  In 1898 Jasper married Rebecca Clemens - for which I have the marriage record - and by the 1900 census in Kansas, Chautauqua Co, Jasper has married Phebe. Jasper has more children with one of his other wives and there has been interesting tiny bits of information for those children, but I am searching for Susan's children, rather than the other descendants of Jasper.

I do have a few other records on these two - census, military, etc, but nothing which particularly applies to their grandparents.

After looking at this again, I've printed out information from my computer to take to the library for research.  The three marriages of Jasper seem out of whack.  The two children, Press and Anna O M, may be children of Susan, after all, but I haven't sorted it out yet.  When - and IF - I do, I will change the information here.

George Jefferson Smith

George Jefferson Smith was the youngest surviving Smith child.  There appears to have been another child - a daughter - born to Emily and Jeff, who died at an early age.  That's apparent because of the large gap between Susan's birth and his and a note from another researcher.

Every time I read the Item from the pension record, I have to remember that the date noted is when each child will become 16 years old and no longer qualified for assistance.  Please take note of that yourself.

Hunting for George Smith on the internet is a frustrating search, yet some day I will find out about George and his family.

It wasn't such a great stretch, but the four Smith children ended up pretty much in the same area - Northeastern Oklahoma and Southwestern Kansas.  Nowata and Coffeyville are just a few minutes from each other across the state lines.  Even if George stayed in Missouri, it wasn't but a few hours journey to the homes of the other siblings.

Tryon and Thompson

In the previous post, I added this picture of Lora Belle Tryon.  For many years her daughter couldn't find a record of her mother's birth - somewhere in Kansas.  My husband and I made a trip to Baxter Springs one time to search in their fine library and museum  We didn't find what we needed, but had a wonderful visit there.  Finally, while searching census records, I found this:

That Baby was Lora, 7 days old, in Kechi Township.  Hooray!  Found at last.  Thank goodness for the state census records!  The interesting thing about this record is that it's just a few miles down the road from where her great-grandson currently lives with his family.  He was born in Oklahoma and grew up in Michigan, but has for quite a few years has lived in Park City, just down the road from where his great-grandmother was born.  

Lora had two sisters, one older and one younger.  The younger sister, Rosetta, died when she was 14 years old.  I never have looked for the cause of her death.  Two other children were born, both boys, Walter Harrison Tryon who only lived about 6 months, and Charles Harry Tryon, who was in his 60s when he died.

Zack Tryon was born in Connorsville, Fayette County, Indiana on the 4th day of February 1849.  He is listed on three census records in Indiana.

Martha Alley is Zach's sister.

Sometime between 1870 and 1880 Zack came to Kansas as shown in the 1885 census record above.  He was living with his uncle, brother to his mother Mary Ann (Cooley) Tryon.  Isaac's portrait and an article appear in the Portrait And Biographical Album of Sedgwick County, Kansas; Chapman Brothers 1888, Pages 329 - 330, A portrait of Mr Cooley graces an adjoining page.

When Zack appears on the 1880 census in Kansas, it is next door to the William Thompson family and included in that list of children is daughter Mary E.  Mary and Zack were married on October 27, 1880, in Wichita, Kansas.  He was 31 and she was 17.

H Z TRYON DIES, Was Wichitan Since 1878 and Dold Employee for Twenty Years

     H Z Tryon, 73 years old, Wichitan since 1878, who had been an inspector and meat piler employed by the Dold packing company for the last 20 years, died of pneumonia at 11:40 o'clock Saturday morning at his home, 1906 Arkansas avenue.  He was taken ill Monday morning.
     Mr Tryon came from Connersville, Ind, his native state.  For a while he farmed, one of his farms being situated on what is now Twenty-fifth street in North Wichita.  During the boom days Mr Tryon was manager of Oak Street stables, Oak (now Murdock avenue) and Main streets.
     Surviving Mr Tryon are his widow, Mrs Mollie E Tryon; two daughters, Mrs William F Buckeridge, 1149 North Market Street, and Mrs J M Chandler, Oklahoma City; his son, Harry Tryon, 1906 Arkansas avenue; a sister, Mrs M E Genn, Chicago, and one broher [sic] N W Tryon, Frederick, Md.  Eight grandchildren also suvice [sic].
     Funeral services will be conducted at 4 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Gill Funeral home.  Burial will be in Highland cemetery.

      Mrs Mary E Tryon, 65, a resident of Wichita for 50 years, died in a local hospital Thursday evening.  Her home was at 921 Litchfield Avenue.
      Mrs Tryon was the widow of the late Zack Tryon, farmer and later with the Dold Packing company, who died seven years ago.  Mrs Tryon was a member of St Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church.  She was born in Fleming, Ky.
      She is survived by two daughters, Mrs J M Chandler, Oklahoma City, and Mrs William Buckeridge, 921 Litchfield Avenue; a son, C H Tryon, Los Angeles; a sister, Mrs W F Edsall, Louann, Ark; five brothers, Robert Thompson, Ft Garland, Colo; Taylor and Sam Thompson, Colorado Springs; Charles Thompson, Anness, and N A Thompson, St Joseph, Mo; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
      Gill mortuary is in charge.

Both are buried in Highland Cemetery, Wichita, Kansas.

Zach and Mollie Tryon

I do have a picture of Zach's mother, Mary Ann Cooley, and I thought I had a picture of his father Noah Tryon.  Turns out, according to an internet descendant of another Tryon, that the photo is of a child of Noah rather than Noah himself, which makes sense since the direct-line-Noah died earlier than a photograph would appear.  Aunt Mary did a lot of research on the Thompson and Cooley and Tryon families and was for many years very involved with the Cooley family organization.  

Aunt Mary had traced Mollie Thompson's line back to:

Smith in the family

Fortunately for me, there is only one Smith line in our direct family tree.  

I have a huge portrait on my wall of a mother and her four Smith children. This is a lousy image since the portrait itself is very nice.  This image looks like it's from an old television, but it's in a good frame with non-glare glass.  I guess that's what gives it such a strange appearance.

Emeline "Emily" Wilson was born November 10, 1833, in Kentucky, the daughter of Elizabeth "Betty" Clark and Samuel Wilson.  On August 1, 1850, Emily married James Jefferson "Jeff" Smith in Grant Co, Kentucky.  Jeff was born about 1829 in Kentucky, the son of Willis and Sarah Smith and died May 14, 1862 in POW Camp Oglethorpe, Georgia.

In 1861 Jeff went off to war.  I ordered the pension file for Emily's application as a widow and it is extensive.  In these papers various dates are given for Jeff's death.  I imagine that even though records were kept, it's a minor miracle that they survived at all.  Here is part of the record.  Item 22 is the final determination of death date and location.

I don't know how long after Jeff's death that Emily learned of it.  She was not yet 30 years old and had four children at home, including a baby less than one year old.  Emily managed for a while, then in March of 1868 she married a widower, Preston Riddle, whose wife had died a year before.  Preston had small children still at home, and the two households became one.  Preston and Emily had three children, one dying as a child, one as a teenager, and one as a young adult.  The article Two Riddles tells about the girls.

This house was probably Preston's home.  I haven't done research on the original owner, but on an early plat map, the owner is shown is Emily Riddle.  Emily lived here the rest of her life, apparently by herself after Preston's death in January 1896 until shortly before her own in September 1909.  I have made myself a note to do some land record looking.

Emily's death is recorded here:

        Emily Riddle was born November 10, 1833, in Grant county, Kentucky, was married to James J Smith August 1, 1850.  To this union were born five children, two sons and three daughters, one of the daughters dying in infancy.  The other four children were present at funeral services.  Her husband enlisted in the service of his country in 1861 and died a prisoner of war, May 17, 1862.
        She was united in her second marriage to Preston Riddle, March 18, 1868, and to this union were born five children, all of whom have preceded her to the better land where sorrow and pain are unknown.
        She was again left a widow January 24, 1896, ad [sic] lived alone for thirteen years, when on June 24, 1909, being stricken with paralysis, she was moved to her daughter's, Mrs J H Greer, where she made her home until her death, which occurred Sept 21, 1909.  She was buried at the Greer Cemetery, seven miles southeast of Clio.  
        She was united with the Methodist church when quite young and lived a quiet christian life, ____ by all who knew her.
        She bore affliction with much patience and christian fortitude, expressing satisfaction with anything done for her.  As her friends, we all feel that she has only crossed the threshold into a more glorious existence and shall strie [sic] to meet her on the plane where partings are no more and while it seems sad to see her on earth no more we abide in the submission, "Thy will, not mine, be done."


Ok, you are saying, Jeff was the Smith, not Emily, except for a while as a wife and also as mother of Smith children.  That's were I am working now.  I have previously written about beginning my hunt for the Smith children, starting with oldest child John Samuel Smith.  I have found some information about George, the youngest, and found that Susan died as a young wife.  Mary Elizabeth, who married James Henry Greer, and is our direct line, is the fourth child.  More to come later on these Smith children as I continue the journey.

Emily had a hard life.  Her obituary says she bore it all with fortitude and patience.  She is an inspiration to me and I'm very glad to have the portrait on my wall.


ps.  Emily had a sister.  Betty Wilson married Henry Burns and they moved to Iowa, it seems like the same time as Emily and Jeff - and it appears a couple of other Wilson children came too.  I have a photograph of Betty and am including it here.

Descendants of Shadrack Chandler and Elizabeth Latta, part 2

James Jackson Chandler, the youngest child of Shadrack and Elizabeth, was born the 18th of December 1824, in Maury County, Tennessee.  He is the earliest Chandler for whom I have a likeness.  

I have these notes in my file:
---pictures of James Jackson and Mary Jane are photographs taken by Jack Chandler while on a visit to Tennessee.  Mary Elizabeth says they were 16x20 charcoal drawings; she has photographs of the original drawings in their frames, hanging on the wall in the home of Bertha (Chandler) Thorne, daughter of James and Mary Jane.  Mary Elizabeth also has an old photograph of James that is the same pose as the drawing, only a full photo - not just head and shoulders.  Feb 2005: she believes that Lanier Thorne . . . grandson of Bertha and great-grandson of James and Mary Jane, would know the current whereabouts of the original pictures.

---Mary Elizabeth Chandler Fields has a watch belonging to James Jackson Chandler.  It is made by Joseph Johnson, Liverpool, England, and was made about 1824, according to the serial number on the watch.  1824 is the year James J was born.  The pocket watch is heavy and is silver with a jeweled movement.  I don't know if there is a correlation between the date of the watch and the birth of James, but it's an intriguing thought that the watch and birthdate match.

James was only 14 when his father Shadrack died.  Next older child, Sarah, married in 1839 so she was still at home at the time of Shadrack's death.  Son John Chandler married July 1938, the same year as his father's death.  Shelby didn't marry until 1850 and is shown here with Elizabeth and James living with he and his new wife.

The 1860 and 1870 census records are eye-openers.  James had a value of personal estate of 2500 dollars.  Since he was a carpenter, he must have had plenty of tools to do his work with.  On the 1870 census, after the Civil War, James had value of real estate of 4000 dollars in and value of personal estate was 1700 dollars.  The value of his possessions is less, but the real estate amount is very interesting.  Yet, he was living in the households of others.  I haven't found enough records to be able to tell why he was in such good financial condition.  

James' brother Shelby died in 1862.  James became guardian of Shelby's son James.  James was still single, caring for his mother and other family members.  

James went to war.

Elizabeth (Latta) Chandler, mother of James, died in August 1872.  James married 24th October 1875 at Columbia, Maury Co, Tennessee.  James was 51 and Nancy was 21.

Nancy was the daughter of John H Miller, a Civil War soldier when not a farmer, and Nancy E Brumley.  John Miller died in 1877, leaving behind his wife and 11 children.  

Mary Jane is listed on only two census records, those of 1860 and 1870.  By April of 1880 she had died, leaving behind three children.  James and his children are living with his mother-in-law, still in Maury Co, Tennessee.

James lived in Tennessee all his life.  When he died, he was buried in Lasting Hope Cemetery, next to Mary Jane.

---Note from Mary Elizabeth Fields:

-In 1977 when John and Mary Elizabeth visited Lasting Hope Cemetery, they had a photo of Mary Jane Miller Chandler's gravestone.  Since there was no longer a marker on James Chandler's grave, we contacted a monument company; they said they would check the cemetery records and place a marker on his grave.  (We had been told that the original marker was of wood.)  So John and Mary and Clinton Chandler paid for and had the stone placed on James Jackson's grave in 1977.

Find a grave memorial for James is 11126110 and for Mary Jane it is 15195895.

The three children of James and Mary Jane lived just a short while longer in Maury County.  The family story says that the children were mistreated by other family members after James died and they found ways to leave the county.  Nannie married and moved away; she married a second time and later died in Oklahoma City, after an illness of several years.  Bertha married and moved to Memphis where she lived until her death.

The third child, James Mallard Chandler, is our direct line.  Jimmy was born March 15th 1880; his mother, Mary Jane, died April 12, 1880, at the age of 26.  

I have never found an explanation for Jim's middle name of Mallard.  I finally looked at the 1880 census (Jim's birth year) for Dist 22, Maury Co, Tennessee, and find that there are two Mallards - one is W L Mallard, farmer, with a wife and children; the other is J R Mallard and wife, he a physician, born Tennessee.  Both men state that their mother was born in North Carolina.  Perhaps this is where James Jackson drew the name for his son - from a neighbor or from the doctor.  

Jim Chandler was, among other things a builder, building for his family a small house in Oklahoma City.

Jim's three children - Jack, Clint, and Mary Elizabeth - sat down at dates between 1976 and 1979 to record their memories of their dad.  I have lengthy typed records from those conversations.

Jim was a steamfitter for most of his life, moving from place to place, until wife Lora said they were going to settle down in one place.  

In 1905 he was living in Dallas, Texas.  One of the older Miller children had moved his mother and some siblings to Texas and Jim was there, too.

By 1910 Jim is listed as a steam fitter working for a plumbing company.  They lived in Wichita when their first child was born.  His name was Clarce Mallard Chandler, but every one called him Jack.

A 1911 city directory for Dallas, Texas lists Jim Chandler as a steamfitter; 1915 they are in Houston; in 1917 in Waco, Texas; in 1919 back in Wichita.  It was 1916 before their second child was born, Clinton on April 20, 1916, in Dallas, Texas.

I think it must have been after that when Lora wanted a permanent home.  They were in Oklahoma city in 1920 and stayed there for the rest of their lives.  Daughter Mary Elizabeth was born 1927 in Oklahoma City.  There was a 10 year gap between the first two children and an 11 year gap between the second and third.  Aunt Mary always said she felt like an only child at times, since Jack was gone from home by the time she came along and Clint so much older, their friends and interests didn't coincide.

I don't know if Henry was Elizabeth's father or brother or other relative.  Elizabeth is not in our direct line, as she is the first wife of Shadrack, so I haven't pursued the Sears line.  Elizabeth Sears and Shadrack Chandler had a son named Thornton, born 1793.  Thornton's age remains consistent on future census records, which almost helps date his sister's birth (below).

Shadrack is listed on the 1800 census in Hillsborough, Orange Co, North Carolina, and again in the same location on the 1810 census.  The spelling of his first name is Shadrick and then Shed on each census.

Elizabeth-the-first died before 1810 and Shadrack married again in that year - Elizabeth-the-second, Elizabeth "Betsie" Latta.

The couple - although at this point I'm not sure which couple - had a daughter born in North Carolina, named Rebecca.  It's difficult to determine a birth date for Rebecca - and even which Elizabeth was her mother.  Rebecca was born in North Carolina, according to future census records, yet the ages vary greatly.  Since it's known that Shadrack and Elizabeth moved to the middle of Tennessee before 1820, the earlier notations should be more accurate than later ones and they usually are more accurate, anyway, when a parent gives information rather than another household member.  Rebecca was a spinster and always living with someone else, so the 1850 through 1880 information could easily have been provided by someone who didn't really know when Aunt Becky was born.

I have been unable to find a death or burial record for Rebecca.  

Thornton and sister Rebecca moved with Shadrack and Betsie to Maury Co, Tennessee.  All children lived in the area until their deaths and are buried in several cemeteries in the area.    

That now puts us in Maury Co, Tennessee for the rest of this journey.

After arriving in Tennessee, Shadrack lived until 1838.

---handwritten note found in records in Maury Co Archives, 2011, saying:
"Circuit Ct (1840-1841), p 19
Thornton Chandler, et al, vs James Chandler, 14 May 1840 - Shadrack Chandler departed this life intestate in 1838, seized of land on Rutherford Cr, 154 a, petitioners heirs of Shadrack.  Depositions of B Foster and Thomas Mahon filed, only 1 spring? and that is included in widow's dower - to be sold for division.  Heirs not named.

While I don't have any stories or references to the life the Chandlers lived in Maury County, the probate record provides as much detail as I can find.

MEF is Mary Elizabeth Chandler Fields, a direct descendant of Shadrack and Betsie and my husband's aunt.  She did much work on the Chandler line, including trips to Tennessee, before I began to be interested in the family history.  She copied these difficult to read records at the courthouse, many years ago.  The record shows that Shadrack was doing all right, financially.

Chandler: An Inventory of the effects of Shadrack Chandler died February 28th 1838:

-Chandler, Shadrack.  Land for sale.  Pursuant to a decree of the circuit court of Maury County at the May term, AD 1840.  "I will on the 11th day of July next, expose to sale on the premises of Shadrack Chandler, deceased, in Dist # 22, upon a credit of one and two years, a tract of land, being the same which said Chandler, deceased, was seized and possessed at the time of his death, and bounded by the lands of H Miller, and others, containing 154 acres including the widow's dower, which is reserved to her, for her exclusive benefit.  The boundaries will be shown on the day of this sale.  H W Smith, commissioner, 4 June 1840."

Shadrack is buried at Chandler Cemetery, Spring Hill, Maury Co, Tennessee, Find a Grave memorial 90071845.

This information below is, to me, important for anyone studying and researching our family line:

---Maury Co Cemeteries, p 85, C-22  Chandler Cemetery

From Hwy 31-N, turn east of Greens Mill Road and go about 3/4 mile.  On the left is an old abandoned house.  Across the road are the remains of an old barn.  The cemetery is in the edge of the woods just beyond the barn.  This is the old Luther Fitzgerald place.

"Mr Fitzgerald says that his great-great-grandfather Sharon? Chandler is buried here.  Later found to be Shadrack Chandler, DAR magazine; also DAR Patriot Index; Shadrack Chandler, from SC, born 1757, died about 1840.  June 25, 1840, Columbia Observer, Circuit Court, May term, Shadrack Chandler, dec'd; Dist 22, May 1840; owned at time of his death 154 acres, including widow's dower.  Index of Pensions gives S C Chandler, S31606."  They Passed This Way, Vol 11, p 345.

NOTE: In the cemetery record above, it states that Shadrack Chandler is on the DAR Index, b 1757 South Carolina, died about 1840.  Our Shadrack was 20 years younger, with a birthdate of 1770, and born North Carolina.

-In April 2011, I was in Maury Co, Tennessee to do research and take photographs. At the Maury Co Archives, 201 E Sixth Street, in Columbia, I found a photocopied series of 9 pages - a form from GSA, National Archives and Records Service, dated August 11, 1970 - an order made by Mrs Jack Lightfoot, Mt Pleasant, Tennessee. The 9 pages include the sheet she used to provide identification of veteran and 8 pages of the National Archives file for the pensioner Shadrack Chandler, from South Carolina, Revolutionary War service, file number of pension or bounty land record S 31606.

-The text of the file, dated 24 March 1836, De Kalb Co, Georgia, is readable - for the most part - and provides military information and some personal information including residences of the petitioner. 

-This Shadrack Chandler, however, states that his birth age is not certain, although he thinks about 1757. He states that he does not remember dates of service although he recounts officer names and locations of service as well as length of time served over three periods. He states that his current age is 79 years, and that he lived - when he volunteered - in Newberry District, South Carolina. He has lived in Goosmill or Gossmill? District of South Carolina, (I cannot find the actual area on relevant maps); in the State of Kentucky, Logan County; in the State of Alabama, counties of Washington, Morengo, and Dallis [sic]; in the State of Tennessee, Robinson County. He now (1836) lives in the State of Georgia, DeKalb County. A statement from John Chandler, of Gwinnett Co, Georgia, testifies to knowledge of Shadrack's military service.

-Family members have tracked our Shadrack Chandler through census, marriage, and land records to show that he left Orange Co, North Carolina before 1820 - when he appears on the Tennessee, Maury Co, census records - until his death there at about age 68, younger than the age of the claimant in this Revolutionary War pension file. Our Shadrack Chandler lived in Maury Co, Tennessee for many years before, during, and after the date of the pension claim, and was buried in Maury Co. I believe, therefore, that this Shadrack Chandler is not the same person as the one in our family.

To further substantiate that the DAR record is not for our Shadrack, are tax, land, and civil records putting our Shadrack in Tennessee for a long time.

Backing up just a bit to Shadrack's children:  Thornton Chandler married twice and had at least 9 children.  

MEF says this:  Thornton's first marriage is unknown to me; he probably married 1830, Tennessee - oldest known child born abt 1832, Tennessee.  They had four children.

-Thornton next married Malinda A CLEMMONS 9 February 1841 in Maury Co, Tennessee.   They had five children.

There are some records attributing Thornton's first marriage, but there are problems with the attributions, so I'm not adding them here.

Shadrack and Betsie (Latta) Chandler had 5 known children, as I'm going to include the above noted  Rebecca - just in case.  The other children were John R Chandler, born February 1810 according to his death records and tombstone; Shelby Chandler, born March 2, 1817 and who also has records to support this; Permelia Chandler, born 1820, and Sarah, born 1823.  As you can see, there is a huge gap, so it seems that there were other children born who did not survive very long.

I have quite a bit of information on these children - John who married Susan Cosby, Shelby who married Lorena Fitzgerald, Permelia who married William Roane, and Sarah who married James Roane, and some photos from Lasting Hope Cemetery on my trip in 2011.  

The last child of Shadrack and Elizabeth was James Jackson Chandler.  I will write about him in part 2 of the Descendants of . . .   He's our direct line child.

You can see that Elizabeth lived 34 years longer than Shadrack.  

I find no record of her marrying again.  

Her youngest son stayed on the farm and took care of her.
