Tryon and Thompson

In the previous post, I added this picture of Lora Belle Tryon.  For many years her daughter couldn't find a record of her mother's birth - somewhere in Kansas.  My husband and I made a trip to Baxter Springs one time to search in their fine library and museum  We didn't find what we needed, but had a wonderful visit there.  Finally, while searching census records, I found this:

1885 Kansas, Sedgwick Co, Kechi Twp, p 19, line 18
Cooley, Isaac, 79, b Pennsylvania / Caroline, 49, b Pennsylvania // Adeline, 17, b Pennsylvania; Emma, 14, b Pennsylvania
- - -
Tryon, H Z, 36, b unknown / Mary, 21, b unknown // Olive May, 2, b unknown; line 25  Baby, 7 days, female, b unknown

That Baby was Lora, 7 days old, in Kechi Township.  Hooray!  Found at last.  Thank goodness for the state census records!  The interesting thing about this record is that it's just a few miles down the road from where her great-grandson currently lives with his family.  He was born in Oklahoma and grew up in Michigan, but has for quite a few years has lived in Park City, just down the road from where his great-grandmother was born.

Lora had two sisters, one older and one younger.  The younger sister, Rosetta, died when she was 14 years old.  I never have looked for the cause of her death.  Two other children were born, both boys, Walter Harrison Tryon who only lived about 6 months, and Charles Harry Tryon, who was in his 60s when he died.

Hiram Zachariah "Zack" Tryon and wife Mary Elizabeth "Mollie"
(Thompson) Tryon with daughters Olive, Lora and Rosetta.

Zack Tryon was born in Connorsville, Fayette County, Indiana on the 4th day of February 1849.  He is listed on three census records in Indiana.

1850 Indiana, Franklin Co, Metamora Twp, 17 October
48/48  Noah Tyron, 35, farmer, b Ohio / Mary, 35, b Indiana // . . . Zachery, 1, b Indiana . . .

1860 Indiana, Franklin Twp, Metamora Twp, Metamora, 27 July
855/784  Mary A Tryon, 43, manager of farms, vore 370, vope 500, b Indiana // Isaac, 21, farm hand, school, b Indiana; Noah, 17, school, b Indiana; Mary A, 15, school, b Indiana; Martha, 13, school, b Indiana; Zachariah, 12, school, b Indiana; Lavina, 10, school, b Indiana; Nicholas, 6, school, b Indiana

1870 Indiana, Franklin Co, Metamora Twp, Metamora, 18 July
199/210  Alley, John, 31, engineer, vope 1000, b Ohio / Martha J, 24, keeping house, b Ohio // Colonel, 4, b Ohio; William, 3, b Ohio; Alley, John, 6/12, b Nov, b Indiana /// Tryon, Lavina, 19, at home, b Indiana; Tryon, Zachariah, 22, teamster, b Indiana . . .
Martha Alley is Zach's sister.

Sometime between 1870 and 1880 Zack came to Kansas as shown in the 1885 census record above.  He was living with his uncle, brother to his mother Mary Ann (Cooley) Tryon.  Isaac's portrait and an article appear in the Portrait And Biographical Album of Sedgwick County, Kansas; Chapman Brothers 1888, Pages 329 - 330, A portrait of Mr Cooley graces an adjoining page.

When Zack appears on the 1880 census in Kansas, it is next door to the William Thompson family and included in that list of children is daughter Mary E.  Mary and Zack were married on October 27, 1880, in Wichita, Kansas.  He was 31 and she was 17.

Zach and Mollie Tryon

I do have a picture of Zach's mother, Mary Ann Cooley, and I thought I had a picture of his father Noah Tryon.  Turns out, according to an internet descendant of another Tryon, that the photo is of a child of Noah rather than Noah himself, which makes sense since the direct-line-Noah died earlier than a photograph would appear.  Aunt Mary did a lot of research on the Thompson and Cooley and Tryon families and was for many years very involved with the Cooley family organization.

Aunt Mary had traced Mollie Thompson's line back to:

William Thompson born 1840 Fleming Co, Kentucky and Mary Jane Lytle born 1844 Fleming Co, Kentucky

William's father A T Thompson born 1811 Virginia and wife Sarah born 1812 Kentucky

Mary Jane's Lytle line to Samuel Ramsey Lytle born 1811 in Kentucky and Elizabeth Todd born 1821 in Kenucky

their lines to Nathaniel Lytle born 1773 in Virginia and Rebecca Ramsey born 1776 Huntington, Bedford Co, Pennsylvania

and John Todd born 1787 and Mary Ann Flynn born 1803 Fleming Co, Kentucky

I am not posting information about them just yet as I have mostly Aunt Mary's excellent research and have not looked at it in a long time - a very long time. It needs a good going-over and updating before I post it.  One of these days . . .
